An appeals court has overturned the hate-crime convictions of 16 Amish who were convicted two years ago of attacking fellow Amish members and cutting off their beards. One of those attacks occurred locally in Holmes County in 2011. The group’s ringleader, 69-year old Sam Mullet, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, while the members in his group all received between one to seven years behind bars. The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati ruled this week that during the trial, the jury received incorrect instructions about how it should weigh the role of religion in the attacks. The court’s decision will not free the Amish, but it will grant them a new trial.
