Holiday Happy Hour Aims to Combat Drunk Driving
Event held in honor of local hero killed in drunk driving crash
WOOSTER, Ohio – Last year alcohol contributed to nearly 100 crashes and three deaths on Wayne County’s roads, according to the Ohio Department of Public Safety crash statistics. One of those deaths was Edward Deane “Big Ed” Smith. This year, in an effort to curb drunk driving and to raise money for Smith’s family, AAA Insurance is partnering with Wayne County Safe Communities to host a Holiday Happy Hour.
Date: November 15, 2013
Time: Noon – 3:00 p.m.
Location: Wooster Community Hospital Auditorium
Who: All are invited to attend
“Big Ed” Smith:
Smith was a beloved family man who was deeply involved in Wooster Youth Baseball, Inc. He was known for maintaining the Miller Field complex, working on equipment and volunteering as an umpire, coach and more. This local hero died suddenly in Oct. 2012. According to the Wooster Post of the State Highway Patrol, an oncoming vehicle traveled left of center and struck Smith’s vehicle, killing him.
Holiday Happy Hour:
On the day of the Holiday Happy Hour, teams made up of local organizations will create non-alcoholic cocktails, or mocktails. Community members are invited to come in, sample these mocktails and vote for their favorite. The mocktail with the most votes will receive the “People’s Choice Award.”
Smith’s wife, Rachel Gorey, will be there to speak about her late husband and the dangers of drunk driving. Gorey, along with Chief Deputy Doug Johnson and Wayne County Career Center Superintendent Kip Crain will also be judging the mocktails and selecting a “Grand Champion.”
The event will also feature holiday entertainment provided by Wayne Center for the Arts, door prizes every 15 minutes, and a chance to meet Santa Claus.
