The Cleveland Browns opened their 2021 campaign on the road Sunday against the defending AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs, which resulted in a brutal 33-29 loss. The Browns took the lead early, taking the opening kickoff down the field resulting in a Nick Chubb 4-yard rushing touchdown and a 2-point conversion by Kareem Hunt. The Chiefs bounced back and moved down the field and got a 28-yard field goal by kicker Harrison Butker, making the score 8-3 at the end of the first quarter.

Browns wide reciever Jarvis Landry ran for a 5-yard touchdown on the following drive, making the score 15-3. Chiefs quarterback and former MVP Patrick Mahomes answered back with a 5-yard rushing touchdown, cutting the lead to 15-10, but the Browns scored one more time before the end of the first half with an 18-yard rushing touchdown by Chubb and taking a 22-10 lead heading into the locker room.

The Chiefs came out of the locker room on fire with Mahomes delivering an 11-yard passing touchdown to tight end Travis Kelce, cutting the lead to 22-17. The following Browns drive resulted in a fumble by Chubb, giving the Chiefs a short field at their own 47 yard line en route to a 43-yard field goal by Butker which made the score 22-20 at the end of the third quarter.

The Browns were able to bounce back the following drive, moving down the field and getting into the endzone once again due to a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Hunt, extending the lead to 29-20. It only took one play for the Chiefs to answer back with a 75-yard touchdown pass from Mahomes to wide receiver Tyreek Hill to cut the lead to a 2-point game once again at 29-27. The next drive for the Browns resulted in a three-and-out with punter Jaime Gillan losing the football and fumbling the snap at the Cleveland 11 yard line. The following drive by the Chiefs resulted in another passing touchdown with Mahomes to Kelce with a missed 2-point conversion attempt, with the Chiefs taking their first lead of the ball game at 33-29. The Browns went three-and-out the following possession with about 5 minutes left, but the defense got a much needed stop which gave the Browns the ball back with about 3 minutes remaining in the ball game.

The Browns got the ball near midfield, but a critical Baker Mayfield interception with 1:16 left in the game sealed the deal for the Chiefs to win the ballgame 33-29.

Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield finished the game going 21-28, 321 passing yards and one interception. Browns running back Nick Chubb ran the ball 15 times for 89 yards and 2 touchdowns, teammate Kareem Hunt ran the ball 6 times for 33 yards and a touchdown and wide receiver Jarvis Landry ran for a touchdown as well as catching 5 passes for 71 yards. Browns tight end David Njoku caught 3 passes for 76 yards and rookie wide receiver Anthony Schwartz cuaght 3 passes for 69 yards.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went 27-36, 337 passing yards and 3 touchdowns will also running for 18 yards and a touchdown as well. Chiefs wIde receiver Tyreek Hill caught 11 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown.

The Browns will be back in action on Sunday, September 19th, for their home opener against the Houston Texans with kickoff set for 1 p.m.
