After just being swept in a doubleheader by the Twins on Saturday (July 2nd) for the first time this season, the Cleveland Guardians were once again swept, this time during a July 4th holiday doubleheader at the Detroit Tigers. The first game was a 1:10pm start, and saw Cleveland lose by a final score of 4-1, while the second game was a 6:40pm start (makeup game from May 27th), which Cleveland dropped by a final score of 5-3.

In Game 1, the only scoring for the Cleveland Guardians happened in the top of the 5th, with 1B Josh Naylor homering to right (376 ft). Starting Pitcher Zach Plezac went 6 full innings and also took the loss in this game, after allowing 2 runs and 6 hits, while earning 3 strikeouts and allowing 2 walks. For Detroit, scoring started right away in the bottom of the 1st, with DH Melky Cabrera hitting a single to center to score OF Riley Green and DH Willi Castro.This was followed up in the 7th, with SS Javier Baez singling to right center to score 2B Johnathon Schoop, and then in the 8th, when C Tucker Barnhart doubled to center to again score Schoop. Rookie starting pitcher Garrett Hill was nearly flawless in his Major League debut, going 6 full innings and allowing just 1 run on 2 hits, while earning three strikeouts and allowing just one walk.

In Game 2, all of the scoring for the Cleveland Guardians (Now 40-37) happened in the top of the 4th. First it was DH Franmil Reyes, doubling to deep left center to score SS Amed Rosario and move up 3B Jose Ramirez. Next, 2B Andres Gimenez would hit a sac fly to right to score Ramirez and move up Reyes. Finally 1B Owen Miller would single to left to score Reyes. Unfortunately, they were never in position to score after this inning, and it proved to not be enough. Rookie Konnor Pilkington went ony 4 full innings, and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits, while earing just 2 strikeouts and allowing 2 walks. Trevor Stephan would then come in to pitch in relief and would end up taking the loss, after going 1 and 1/3 innings and allowing 1 run on 2 hits, with 2 strikeouts and no walks. Detroit started scoring in the bottom of the 3rd, with CF Riley Greene grounding into a fielders choice to score Schoop. This was followed in the 4th, with Schoop singling to center to score 3B C Eric Haase, and then RF Victor Reyes would ground into a fielders choice to score 3B Harold Castro. In the 6th, Greene would reach on an infield single to the pitcher and score 1B Spencer Torkelson. Finally for Detroit scoring, In the 7th Haase would homer to left (389 ft). Starting pitcher Alex Faedo went only 3 and 2/3 innings, while allowing 3 runs on 4 hits, earning 3 strikeouts, and allowing 4 on with walks. Relief Pitcher Tyler Alexander would then take over and get the win, for going 3 and 1/3 innings, while allowing no runs on 2 hits, and earning no strikeouts or allowing any walks.

Cleveland will try to get back to winning ways in another game at Detroit tommorow evening (Tuesday July 5th), with a game that is scheduled for a 7:10pm first pitch (pregame starts on WQKT at 6:35pm). RHP Cal Quantrill is the probable starter for the Guardians.
