The Cleveland Guardians defeated the San Diego Padres on the road on Thursday night by a final score of 8-6 to avoid a series sweep against the Padres, who win the three-game series 2-1.

For Cleveland (32-36), the Guardians began a massive 1st inning with designated hitter Josh Naylor hitting a two-run single to give Cleveland a 2-0 lead. That same inning, catcher David Fry hit a three-run homerun, the first of his major league career, to extend the Cleveland lead to 5-0. The following 2nd inning, third baseman Jose Ramirez hit an RBI double to give Cleveland a 6-3 lead. Ramirez would later get another RBI in the form of an infield single which scored a run and extended the Cleveland lead to 7-5. The final run for the Guardians came in the 8th inning, when second baseman Andres Gimenez hit an RBI single to give Cleveland a 8-6 lead and eventual win.

Starting pitcher Logan Allen went 3.0 innings, struck out three batters, and allowed four hits and four walks for five earned runs. Relief pitcher Trevor Stephan got his third win of the season for going 1.2 innings, striking out a batter, and allowing only a walk for no runs. Closer Emmanuel Clase got his 21st save of the season for going 1.1 innings, striking out a batter, and allowing only a walk for no runs.

For San Diego (33-35), the Padres answered a massive top of the 1st inning from Cleveland with a three-run homerun by third baseman Manny Machado in the bottom of the 1st inning to cut the Cleveland lead to 5-3. in the 3rd inning, first baseman Brandon Dixon grounded out, but was able to score two runs with the ground out and cut the Cleveland lead to 6-5. Outfielder Trent Grisham would hit an RBI double in the 5th inning to cut the Cleveland lead to 7-6, but the Padres would not be able to mount a comeback and fell to the Guardians by a final of 8-6.

Starting pitcher Ryan Weathers suffered his fifth loss of the season for going 1.2 innings, striking out two batters, but allowing seven hits for six earned runs.

The Guardians will next begin a three-game series on the road against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday, June 16th, with first pitch set for 9:40 p.m.
