A Holmes County man recently lost $1.3 million in a cryptocurrency scam.  Court documents show the criminals convinced the 68-year old victim to meet a courier in a Lowe’s parking lot in Mt. Vernon five times between September and December of last year, handing over hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash each time.  The scammers told the victim the courier would then put the money into a crypto account.  A phony app showed the victim that his investment had skyrocketed to more than $15 million, but he was unable to withdraw any of it.  Eventually, the man contacted the Holmes County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI, which set up a sting operation that resulted in the arrest of the courier, who is now facing charges of conspiracy to commit money laundering.
