Fresh off getting swept in a 3-game series against the Oakland Athletics, the Cleveland Indians were able to defeat the Detroit Tigers on the road by a final score of 7-4. Indians second baseman Ernie Clement had himself a career night, having a 2-homerun game with both being the first two homeruns of his major league career. Clement’s first solo homerun came in the 3rd inning, the same inning that Ahmed Rosario hit an RBI single, which gave the Indians a 2-0 lead. The Indians offense continued to shine in the 4th when third baseman Yu Chang hit an RBI triple and catcher Austin Hedges hit a sacrifice fly, giving the Indians a 4-0 lead through four innings. The Tigers fought back, with an Eric Haase solo homerun and a Robbie Grossman RBI double in the 5th inning which cut the lead to 4-2. The Indians bounced back with a sacrifice fly from first baseman Owen Miller and a solo homerun from Chang in the 6th inning, along with Clement’s second solo homerun of the day in the 7th inning. The Tigers attempted to make a comeback with a 2-run homerun by first baseman Renato Nunez in the bottom of the 9th, but were unsuccessful in the comeback attempt and fell to the Indians 7-4. Indians starting pitcher Zach Plesac went over 7 innings pitched with a pitch count of 101, striking out 9 batters and allowing 2 earned runs on 5 hits. The Indians will continue this 3-game road trip in Detroit on Saturday with first pitch set for 6:10 p.m.
