The Mid-American conference announced on Saturday that it was cancelling the fall football season, becoming the first high profile league at the collegiate level to do so.

The MAC’s 12 schools faced a substantial financial burden by trying to maintain protocols related to the coronavirus while some schools like Kent St. lost substantial paydays when out of conference games against teams like Alabama, Kentucky, and Penn St. were cancelled. MAC schools rely heavilly on reveneu generated from playing road games against power five conferences.

MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher discussed the difficult decision the conference had to make “It was not made lightly nor without significant contemplation and conversation over the past weeks.”

No decision has been made regarding winter sports at the momement which include men’s and women’s basketball. The MAC is currenlty formenting a plan to provide a spring football schedule for the conference.
