The Padres have agreed to a deal to acquire starter Mike Clevinger from the Indians. The teams have not commented on the deal, which is pending a physical.
According to sources, catcher Austin Hedges, right-hander Cal Quantrill, outfielder Josh Naylor, shortstop Gabriel Arias , left-hander Joey Cantillo and infielder Owen Miller are headed to Cleveland. Along with Clevinger, the Padres get outfielder Greg Allen and a player to be named.Cleveland placed Clevinger on the restricted list earlier this season along with right-hander Zach Plesac for violating MLB’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols. He had made three starts prior to that in 2020, posting a 3.24 ERA, but with 10 walks in 16 2/3 innings. Clevinger, 29, owns a 3.20 ERA (141 ERA+) and 27 percent strikeout rate in 101 career appearances (88 starts). He is under team control for two more years after this season and is currently arbitration eligible.
