This year’s finalists for the Roy Bates Player of the Year Award have been announced.  Eight Wayne County student athletes were chosen as finalists from a pool of nearly 60 applicants.  This year’s finalists are Northwestern’s JJ Cline, Nowayne’s Jake Hanzie, Wooster’s Evan Heller, Chippewa’s Celina Koncz, Smithville’s Sarah Meech, Triway’s Sydney Sherrieb, Dalton’s Kelsey Shoup and Waynedale’s Matthew Weaver.  Each will receive a one-time $2,500 scholarship from the Bates Foundation.  This year’s overall winner will be announced on May 17th.
