The city of Akron is canceling its annual Rib, White and Blue Festival in the wake of a protest that was in response to the fatal shooting of a black man by Akron police officers. Activists gathered in front of the Akron Police Department headquarters yesterday morning to protest the death of Jayland Walker, who was shot dead by police early Monday after a car chase. The city opted to cancel several Downtown events, in addition to the rib fest, in anticipation of escalating tension. It is unclear whether or not the city’s fireworks display will still take place on Monday night.
