A project has been put together to help honor and continue the legacy of Wooster’s own Charles Follis. Follis, the first African-American professional football player, will have a new memorial stone for his gravesite, a new scholarship and plaques and markers will be set across the city in the three phases of the project. The Charles Follis Trail will see 9 plaques placed in the city telling his story, as well as markers at his childhood home, Cornerstone Elementary, which was originally the football field where Follis played, and at Follis Field. The Charles Follis Scholarship will also be presented to a Wayne County Africa-American student-athlete.
